Taipei, Health authorities in Pingtung County are reinforcing environmental cleanups to remove potential breeding grounds of mosquitoes that spread dengue fever after increasing numbers of the insects were detected over the past three weeks.
High vector mosquito populations have been found in nine of the county's 32 townships, according to Pingtung County's Public Health Bureau, and residents in the high-risk townships are being mobilized to check if their living space is free of mosquito breeding hideouts.
As of Friday, there have been 33 indigenous cases of dengue infection reported nationwide since the beginning of the year -- 18 in New Taipei, nine in Taichung, two each in Taipei and Chiayi County, and one each in Taoyuan and Kaohsiung -- according to the latest update by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Twenty of the 33 cases were recorded in August, with 11 reported in New Taipei, six in Taichung, two in Chiayi County and one in Taoyuan, CDC data showed.
