A group of 10 Taiwan nationals evacuated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) from Ukraine to Poland returned to Taiwan Thursday evening.
The group, including four students and two three-month-old twins, departed from the Turkish capital Istanbul early Thursday morning and arrived at Taoyuan International Airport at 5:16 p.m.
They received PCR tests on arrival and were allowed to proceed with mandatory quarantine after their tests result came back negative, according to the National Immigration Agency (NIA).
The 10 people had been in Ukraine until they were evacuated from Kyiv to Poland with eight others by bus on Feb. 24, the day Russia began its invasion of the Eastern European nation.
The group arrived in Poland on Feb. 26, and flew from Warsaw, the capital of Poland, two days later to Istanbul, according to the government, which issued official documents to them so they could board the plane without proof of negative COVID-19 test results.
One of the four students, surnamed Chang (?), provided a video to local media upon arrival in Taiwan, in which he expressed gratitude for the help and support from Taiwan’s foreign missions and government agencies.
The group has been through a lot during their journey, he said, adding that he hopes the situation in Ukraine returns to normal soon so that he can continue his studies.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) said Thursday in a press statement that it would help students like Chang continue their studies in Taiwan.
Students who wish to take courses at a university in Taiwan or transfer to a Taiwanese school and pursue a degree should get in touch with the MOE for further information, the ministry said.
