Taipei, Six crewmen aboard a fishing boat based out of Yilan County were rescued at sea after they were forced to abandon ship when it caught on fire Tuesday, according to a statement issued later that day by the Coast Guard Administration (CGA).
According to the statement, the county's Su'ao Townshipregistered Hsin Chin Fa No.6 was reported to be on fire at 11:23 a.m. while it was 19 nautical miles off the county's Nan'ao Township.
The boat's crew, which included two Taiwanese, three Indonesians and one Chinese national, jumped overboard after discovering the fire, the CGA statement said.
Five of the crew were later rescued by a CGA vessel, while one Indonesian crewman was airlifted to safety by helicopter, the CGA statement said.
As of 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Yang Chi the CGA's Offshore Flotilla 7 deputy chief, said the boat was still burning but had drifted to approximately 16 nautical miles from land.
