91-year-old kills woman after reversing onto sidewalk at high speed

A 51-year-old woman was killed and three others injured after a 91-year-old car driver with a revoked license reversed at high speed onto a sidewalk in Taoyuan’s Guishan District Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the accident occurred at 5:22 p.m. Saturday, when a 91-year-old man, surnamed Lee (李), reversed his car at high speed nearly 200 meters in the wrong direction down Wenhua 3rd Road.

Police said that Lee’s car clipped two scooter riders waiting at an intersection, before running over a 13-year-old boy and his 51-year-old mother standing on the adjacent sidewalk and crashing into a tree.

Police said that the 51-year-old woman, surnamed Teng (鄧), had been killed in the accident, while the 13-year-old boy and two scooter drivers had been hospitalized.

Police said Lee had been driving without a license after it was revoked, adding that no trace of alcohol had been found in the 91-year-old’s system.
