Kaohsiung-Police in Kaohsiung on Wednesday broke up an illegal gambling operation in Pingtung County and arrested 20 suspects, including 12 absconded migrant workers who had been recruited by Taiwanese ringleaders to lure online gamblers.
Acting on a tipoff, Kaohsiung police raided a house in Pingtung's Checheng District, where they found 32 mainframe computers, 68 computer monitors, a number of guidebooks and NT$180,000 (US$5,898) in cash, all of which were seized.
The data on the computer revealed that since September, the illegal gambling website had received some 3.55 billion Vietnamese Dong (about NT$4 million) in bets, mainly from gamblers overseas.
During the raid, police arrested eight Taiwanese suspected of running the illegal gambling ring and 12 migrants who had absconded from their legal jobs and had been recruited to lure players to the website.
The case has been handed over to the Pingtung District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
