Airport travelers to enjoy discounted fares on MRT lines

Passengers traveling to and from Taiwan’s main gateway who transfer between the mass rapid transit (MRT) Circular Line and the Taoyuan Airport MRT will enjoy a 20 percent fare discount from Oct. 13, Taoyuan Metro Corp. said Thursday.

The discount, effective for one month until Nov. 12, will be launched on the day Taiwan reopens its borders, the metro company said in a release.

The 20 percent discount will be applicable to passengers going to and from either of the two terminals at Taoyuan International Airport via a transfer at New Taipei Industrial Park Station, which is served by both the Circular Line and the Taoyuan Airport MRT.

Earlier this week, the metro company also announced that express services on the Airport MRT will be resumed on weekends and during off-peak hours on weekdays beginning Oct. 13. The interval between trains will be 30 minutes.

Peak-hour services on the Airport MRT will still see intervals of 15 minutes for both the express and commuter trains, it said.

According to the company, ridership volume dropped from 70,000 passengers a day to just over 10,000 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The decline led to the cancellation of express trains on weekends and during off-peak hours on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and after 7 p.m. until the service closes. Express trains only run during peak hours on weekdays.

The opening of Taiwan’s borders will lead to increased traffic, hence the resumption of more frequent express trains, it explained.
