Alishan Forest Railway Celebrated in Lonely Planet’s ‘Epic Train Trips’

Chiayi: The Alishan Forest Railway has gained international attention by being featured in Lonely Planet's "Epic Train Trips of the World," recognized as Taiwan's sole entry in the global travel guide that encompasses 200 iconic rail routes around the world.

According to Focus Taiwan, the book, published in September, highlights 13 extraordinary rail journeys in Asia, dedicating a comprehensive four-page chapter to the Alishan Forest Railway. This century-old mountain line is renowned for its steep climb through switchbacks, starting from Chiayi and ascending to the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. The journey offers breathtaking views, passing through lush tea plantations, dense woodlands, and eventually rising into the clouds.

In a news release on Monday, the Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office emphasized that this prestigious listing coincides with the anticipated full reopening of the main line in 2024. The railway has undergone extensive reconstruction and repair work over the years, ensuring its preservation and continued operation. Chou Heng-kai, the office's deputy director, has expressed that Lonely Planet's acknowledgment helps to highlight the railway's historical and cultural significance, further promoting its legacy.
