Another cold wave to grip northern Taiwan

Northern Taiwan is set for a second cold wave of the Lunar New Year holiday, with the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issuing an advisory Thursday warning of temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius in areas north of Taichung.

The CWB said New Taipei, Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, and Yilan, were likely to see temperatures dip below 10 degrees from Thursday afternoon through to Friday morning.

The bureau added that the effects of the cold wave could linger until Sunday, reminding residents in areas north of Taichung to stay warm and pay attention to indoor ventilation and electrical safety when using gas water heaters and electric heaters.

In addition, the elderly and those with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases should pay attention to day-night temperature differences, while farmers should take precautions as well, the CWB said.

Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (???) said the cold wave would be dry and somewhat weaker than the first of the holiday earlier in the week, but cautioned that radiative cooling could bring early morning temperatures in low-lying areas down to around 6 degrees.

Areas in northern and eastern Taiwan could see sporadic rainfall Friday, with sunny skies in other parts of the country over the weekend, Wu added.
