Army Demotes Officer Over Racial Slur Against Japanese-Taiwanese Conscript

Taipei: Taiwan's Army demoted a company commander late Monday night after he was accused of using a racial slur against a Japanese-Taiwanese conscript serving under his command. The 6th Army Corps Command confirmed that the captain was removed from his position in the Yilan-based 153rd Infantry Brigade immediately.

According to Focus Taiwan, the command announced that further disciplinary actions could be taken pending the results of an ongoing internal probe. The case will also be referred to prosecutors for investigation into possible public insult charges. The command emphasized that all conscripts should receive equal treatment, without discrimination based on ethnicity or nationality. Senior officials from the brigade have been dispatched to apologize to the conscript and his family.

The statement followed a social media post by the conscript, who is currently completing his four-month compulsory military service. In his post, he accused his company commander of repeatedly using a derogatory ethnic slur in Chinese, similar to "j-p." Despite his complaints to the commander to stop, the slur continued, and the commander allegedly also made disparaging remarks about his mother and fellow conscripts.
