Jakarta, Taiwan's Gu Shiau-shuang (???) overcame Uzbek Bakhriniso Babaeva 3-2 to take the gold medal in the final of the women's under-50 kg karate at the Asian Games Monday in Indonesia.
In a match in Turkey earlier this year, Gu easily defeated Babaeva 9-1. In their latest encounter, with 58 seconds to call the match, Gu scored three points with her kicking, but Babaeva soon gained two points in a fierce counterattack. Gu, however, prevailed with a successful last-moment defense.
Gu's win gave Chinese Taipei a second gold in the sport, after Wen Tzu-yun (???) defended her title in the women's under 55-kg division to become the first athlete to be bantamweight champion in two consecutive Asian Games.
Wen defeated Iran's Khaksar Taravat 4-0, defending the Asian Games title she won in Incheon, South Korea in 2014.
