Taipei--At least three people have been reported dead and seven injured in a series of car accidents in Pingtung County on Friday, Pingtung police said Saturday, as an investigation into the cause of the accidents continues.
While driving alone in Pingtung's Wandan Township at around 10 p.m. Friday, a 36-year-old woman, surnamed Yang, hit another car and drove away, said Wei Kun-nan (???) of the Pingtung County Police Bureau.
Yang drove another 200 meters before bumping into another silver-colored car, which later collided with a third car, Wei said.
Five people were in the silver car -- the driver, a 37-year-old man also surnamed Yang, his wife, and three children.
Yang and two of his children (a 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son) suffered serious injuries, and died at the hospital where they were taken after the accident occurred, the police said.
Yang's 34-year-old wife sustained only minor injuries, but her 3-year-old daughter was seriously hurt and transferred to a hospital in neighboring Kaohsiung to receive further treatment, the police said.
After hitting two cars, the 36-year-old woman also suffered serious injuries and is being treated at a hospital, the police said.
A test has confirmed that she was not driving under the influence of alcohol and other tests are being conducted to determine if she was on drugs, the police added.
She said she "forgot" and "was unaware" of what happened when first questioned by police about the cause of the accidents.
The driver of the first car hit by the woman sustained only minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the three people in the car hit by the silver car all suffered minor injuries, including the driver.
