Ransomware attacks on Taiwan 2nd most in Asia
Over 2 million ransomware attacks have been detected in Taiwan in the first half of 2016, making it the most attacked country in Asia after Japan, according to a report by Trend Micro Inc., a Taiwan-based developer of Internet security software.
The mid-year security report showed that Taiwan’s ransomware threats accounted for 22 percent of such threats in Asia, trailing only Japan’s 23 percent. Ransomware is a computer malware that forces its victims to pay a ransom to restore the affected computer.
The number of new ransomware families in the first six months of 2016 eclipsed the total volume in 2015 by 172 percent, according to the report, which predicted more damage in the remaining months of the year.
In addition to ransomware threats, Trend Micro said Taiwanese companies are also facing increasing Advanced Persistent Threats (APT).
Bob Hung (???), general manager of Trend Micro Taiwan & Hong Kong business unit, said his company’s data over the past four years shows that the government, high-tech and financial sectors are the top three sectors most susceptible to APT attacks in Taiwan.
They accounted for 78 percent of all APT attacks in the country, he said.
