New taipei: A statue of the late Taiwanese singer and actress Barbie Hsu has been unveiled by her mother, affectionately known as "S Mom," and her South Korean husband, Koo Jun-yup, at her resting place in New Taipei. The ceremony took place one year after Hsu's untimely death, with family members and celebrities in attendance.
According to Focus Taiwan, the statue, designed by Koo, is located in Chin Pao San, a private cemetery, and is surrounded by nine cubes symbolizing nine planets. It faces south toward Taipei, representing the family's everlasting love for Hsu and their hope for it to endure. Family members, including Hsu's younger sister Dee Hsu, were present at the unveiling.
The memorial event was attended by several notable personalities, including Super Junior's Choi Si-won, Taiwanese television producer Wang Wei-chung and his wife, TV hosts Kevin Tsai and Matilda Tao, as well as singer Rainie Yang. Members of F4, Jerry Yan and Vic Chou, and Taipei Financial Center Corp. Chairperson Janet Chia, along with her husband Chiu Li-kuan, were also present to pay their respects.
Barbie Hsu passed away from pneumonia at 48 on February 2, 2025, during a trip to Japan. She had contracted influenza over the Lunar New Year holiday. Hsu initially gained fame as a singer alongside her sister Dee, performing under the name S.O.S., later changed to ASOS. She transitioned to television, achieving stardom with her role in the 2001 Taiwanese drama "Meteor Garden."
In her personal life, Hsu married Chinese entrepreneur Wang Xiaofei in 2010, with whom she had two children before their divorce in 2021. She later rekindled a romance with Koo Jun-yup, whom she married in 2022. Koo, deeply affected by her passing, reportedly visits her resting place almost daily.
