A college student surnamed Sung (?) who was beaten unconscious by three men following a car accident in Taichung has regained consciousness, a doctor at Taichung Veterans General Hospital said Friday.
“The pressure in his brain has eased over the past two days, allowing us to give him a lower dose of sedatives since yesterday,” said Andrew Shen (???), director of the hospital’s Neurology Institute.
“A CT scan showed no signs of an edema, he regained consciousness, can respond to stimuli and hopefully has made it through the most critical period,” Shen said.
Sung, 18, a student at Feng Chia University, was beaten unconscious early Sunday morning by 23-year-old Chang Tun-liang (???), 25-year-old Lee Wei-lin (???) and 19-year-old Chen Chin-hao (???), following a minor traffic accident.
It happened when Sung’s car glanced the Maserati the trio was in, as changing lanes at the intersection of Taiwan Boulevard and Henan Road.
Lee was driving the Maserati, in which Chang and Chen were passengers.
The three men immediately called four friends to come to the scene, forced Sung out of his car and assaulted him with a baseball bat, despite the fact that he repeatedly apologized.
Sung was rushed to hospital unconscious and remained that way until Friday morning.
The three men were initially detained only briefly by the police before being released on Sunday, but after prosecutors took over the case they were arrested and held incommunicado Thursday on the grounds that they pose a flight risk and could collude to pervert the course of justice.
The suspects are now being investigated for attempted murder, offenses against public order, threatening behavior and intentional injury.
“I’m so happy that my son’s condition has improved,” Sung’s mother told reporters while expressing her anger at the three alleged assailants.
She said she would probably sue all three after viewing video footage, because “they all took part in the assault.” “One beat my son with a baseball bat, while the other two held him by the arms.”
On Thursday, Chang’s parents went to the hospital, where they knelt down in front of the gate to beg the forgiveness of Sung’s mother, but she refused to meet with them, saying “I will only accept their apology if they can give my son back his health.”
According to media reports, Chang, who beat Sung with a baseball bat, had previously been charged with operating a gambling website since late 2020, and the three men were also jointly involved in other cases of threatening behavior and inflicting bodily harm.
These cases are being investigated by prosecutors, deputy chief prosecutor Chuo Chun-chung (???) of the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, told CNA.
According to Chuo, Chang was indicted in May for the use of threatening behavior and violence when seeking to collect a debt with his friends.
