Taipei, The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved a proposal to abolish the first paragraph of Article 95 of the Electricity Act, halting the policy of phasing-out nuclear power by 2025 in accordance with the result of the Nov. 24 referendum.
The proposed repeal will be brought before the Legislative Yuan for review, Executive Yuan spokeswoman Kolas Yotaka said after a Cabinet meeting.
She added that Premier Lai Ching-te (???) said in the meeting that the government's goal of making the country nuclear-free remains unchanged, even though the 2025 deadline has been canceled.
The referendum asked: "Do you agree with abolishing the first paragraph of Article 95 of the Electricity Act, which means abolishing the provision that 'all nuclear-energy-based power-generating facilities shall cease to operate by 2025'?"
The paragraph was part of the platform on which President Tsai Ing-wen (???) ran for president in 2016.
