Taipei-A channel connecting the Nanfang'ao fishing port to the open sea was re-opened Thursday after debris caused by a bridge collapse two days ago was cleared.
The bridge at the entrance to Nanfang'ao, a fishing town in eastern Taiwan's Yilan County, collapsed at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, injuring 12 and killing six migrant workers as it crashed down onto fishing boats in the port.
Rescue units have been working around the clock since the incident happened. Navy personnel have been cutting metal cables, guardrails and removing other support systems attached to the fallen bridge blocking the only entry and exit channel to the fishing port.
About 500 fishing boats had been stranded inside the fishing port because of the obstructions.
