A China Airlines Airbus 330 arriving from Manila executed a go-around after its tail hit the runaway and then made a successful landing at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on Saturday, the Aviation Safety Council (ASC) said Sunday.
The ASC confirmed that the structure of the aircraft's tail had sustained substantial damage and it said it will investigate the case.
China Airlines flight 704 from Manila was in the process of landing in Taiwan Saturday evening when its tail touched the ground, prompting its pilots to fly a go-around. It then landed safely on the second attempt.
There was no explanation from either the airline or the regulator why the tail of the aircraft scraped the runway.
The airline said it has carried out full safety inspections on the aircraft and will have the A330 airplane repaired in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer.
