Taipei, The Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Wednesday that it closely monitored the movements of a number of Chinese military aircraft operating near Taiwan earlier in the day.
Without specifying exactly how many planes were involved, a statement from the MND said People's Liberation Army (PLA) Xian H-6 bombers departed from their air bases in Guangdong Province earlier that day.
The aircraft flew to the South China Sea for routine distant-sea exercises, it noted.
They were watched closely by Taiwanese military vessels and aircraft until the bombers returned to their bases later that same day, the MND said.
The military continues to closely monitor the country's surrounding waters and airspace to ensure Taiwan's security, the MND said.
The PLA training exercise came only one day after two U.S. Navy vessels sailed through the Taiwan Strait from Monday through Tuesday, the second such transit made by U.S. military ships this year, prompting a protest from Beijing.
