A man from China was arrested by Taiwanese coast guard officers Friday for attempting to illegally enter outlying Kinmen County to seek employment, according to the local authorities.
The 23-year-old man, surnamed Liu, was spotted sitting on a chunk of polystyrene and paddling toward Shi Yu, an islet west of the main island of Kinmen Friday afternoon, the Kinmen coast guard said Saturday.
Coast guard officers arrested the man near the harbor at Shi Yu, they said.
During an interrogation, Liu, from China's Guangxi Province, said he found the polystyrene chunk and a paddle at a beach in the Chinese city of Xiamen, they said. Xiamen lies only a few kilometers across the Taiwan Strait from Kinmen.
Liu had previously made his living as a car valet, earning about 1,000 Chinese yuan (US$150) per month, and started to plan to move to Kinmen to work there in the hope of making more money, the coast guard said.
He was referred to Kinmen prosecutors for further investigation, they said.
