Chinese panda experts arrive to examine Taipei Zoo’s Tuan Tuan

Two panda experts from China have arrived at Taipei Zoo to examine the health of an 18-year-old male giant panda, Tuan Tuan (團團), diagnosed with a brain lesion in September.
Chinese veterinarians Wu Honglin (吳虹林) and Wei Ming (魏明) from the Wolong National Nature Reserve in China’s Sichuan Province went directly to examine Tuan Tuan after arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Tuesday evening, according to Taipei Zoo.
Wu and Wei will explain the results of their examination of Tuan Tuan at a 2 p.m. press conference on Wednesday, Taipei Zoo said.
Veterinarians diagnosed Tuan Tuan with a brain lesion after the panda suffered three seizures in late August and appeared increasingly lethargic and unsteady on his feet.
The zoo said a recent MRI scan showed that the lesion area had grown and was also exerting pressure on other parts of Tuan Tuan’s brain.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan’s top agency handling cross-Taiwan Strait affairs, approved a request last week from Taipei Zoo for the Chinese panda experts to visit Tuan Tuan.
Tuan Tuan and a female giant panda, Yuan Yuan (圓圓), both then 4 years old, were gifted by China to Taipei Zoo in 2008.
