Taiwanese cinematographer Lin Tsan-ting (???) and director Tsai Yang-ming (???) will each receive a Golden Horse lifetime achievement award this year, the festival's executive committee announced Monday.

Upon hearing the news, Lin's first reaction was to express gratitude to those who worked with him to help develop Taiwan's motion picture industry, the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee said in a statement.

Lin, 92, began his career in 1949 as one of the first apprentices at Agriculture Education Motion Pictures, which evolved into the Central Motion Picture Corporation in 1954.

Learning from techniques that were being used in Japan, Lin helped to convert Taiwan's film industry from black and white to color, the committee said.

During his career, he collaborated with renowned director Pai Ching-jui (???) on several reputable films such as "Lonely Seventeen" (??????) and "Home Sweet Home" (????).

Over the years, Lin worked on more than 130 films, and he won four Golden Horse Awards for Best Cinematography for the movies "Lonely Seventeen," "Love Begins Here" (????), "Girlfriend" (???), and "The Victory" (??). He also won Best Cinematography at the Asia Pacific Film Festival for "Falling Snowflakes" (????).

Lin is the first Taiwanese cinematographer to be named for a lifetime achievement award at the annual Golden Horse Awards, which are among the most prestigious and time-honored awards in the world of Chinese-language cinema.

At the 58th Golden Horse Awards in November, Taiwanese director Tsai will also receive a lifetime award, the committee said Monday.

Tsai, 82, started out in 1963 as an actor, performing in more 200 Taiwanese films, including "The Golden Spears" (????), "City of Sorrow" (????), and "Life in the Back Street" (????), the committee said.

When he got into directing, Tsai became known as the "godfather of Taiwanese gangster movies," directing films such as "Gangland Odyssey" (???), "Fatal Recall" (????), and "Ah Dai" (??), which brought a unique flavor to local cinema at the time.

The committee said Lin and Tsai will formally receive the awards at the Golden Horse ceremony on Nov. 27 at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
