Control Yuan President Chen Chu Steps Down Due to Health Concerns

Taipei: The Presidential Office announced that Chen Chu will be relieved of her duties as Control Yuan president, Control Yuan member, and chairperson of Taiwan’s National Human Rights Commission following her resignation. The resignation will take effect on February 1, as stated by the office.

According to Focus Taiwan, Chen Chu sought medical treatment for a cold in late 2024 at Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital. During her treatment, doctors discovered a tumor on her right kidney. After undergoing surgery, she suffered a cerebral embolism on the left side of her brain. The hospital later reported that Chen’s rehabilitation is stable and progressing steadily.

Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo stated that President Lai Ching-te has appointed Control Yuan Vice President Lee Hung-chun as acting president. This appointment will ensure continuity in leadership and operations within the Control Yuan.

In September, the Control Yuan clarified that Chen’s leave of absence was in compliance with relevant regulations. During her absence, Chen waived her monthly salary, which was returned to the national treasury at the start of each month.

Kaohsiung City Councilor Chien Huan-tsung, a member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and a prot©g© of Chen, expressed his support for her decision to resign. He indicated that Chen had long desired to step down and can now focus entirely on her recovery.
