Taipei--Two major convenience stores chains said on Monday that they issued six uniform invoices that won NT$10 million (US$329,600) special prizes in the Jan-Feb. uniform invoice lottery.
The 7-Eleven convenience chain store said it issued four NT$10 million invoices with the winning number 82885130 announced last Saturday, with one of the winners spending just NT$8 at a store in Hsiusui, Changhua.
The other three invoices were issued to patrons who spent NT$43 at a store in Fangshan township, Pingtung County, NT$95 at a store in Sanchong, New Taipei and NT$164 at a store in the East District of Hsinchu City.
Family Mart said it issued two invoices that won the special prize, including a customer who spent NT$83 on two large cups of latte at a store in Yunghe, New Taipei and a patron who bought batteries and snacks for a total of NT$95 at store in Shulin, New Taipei.
7-Eleven also issued two invoices and Family Mart one that received the NT$2 million grand prize for the number 59729884.
7-Eleven announced the NT$2 million invoices were issued at a store in Daan District and another in Songshan District.
Family Mart said its NT$2 million invoice was issued at a store in Chutung, Hsinchu.
The reasons why the special prizes are often won by customers who spend relatively little can be partly explained by the large number of convenience stores in Taiwan.
As of the end of 2016, there were 5,107 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan, 3,049 Family Mart stores as of November and 1,281 Hi-Life stores as of May.
Three numbers qualify for the first prize of NT$200,000 -- 04598625, 13193259 and 87827366.
Invoice holders that match the last seven digits of the first-prize numbers win a cash prize of NT$40,000 and those with invoices that match the last six digits win NT$10,000.
Other prizes are NT$4,000 for invoices that contain the last five digits of the first-prize numbers, NT$1,000 for invoices with the last four digits and NT$200 for invoices with the last three digits.
An additional prize of NT$200 goes to holders of invoices ending with the three-digit combination 125.
To collect their prizes, winners should take their winning receipts and ID cards to any post office by July 5, 2017.
The uniform invoice lottery system, which draws the winning numbers every two months, was created to encourage consumers to keep their sales invoices as part of efforts by the the Ministry of Finance to prevent tax evasion by retailers.
The winning numbers for the March-April uniform invoices are scheduled to be drawn and announced on May 25.
