CORONAVIRUS/Employee at Taoyuan steakhouse tests positive for COVID-19

A worker at a Taoyuan steakhouse, who also attends a vocational high school in the city, has tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the 56th case in a recent domestic outbreak there, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Thursday evening.

Five family members and 40 other contacts at the school in Zhongli District have been quarantined, while classes have been suspended at two other schools until next week as a precaution, because they are attended by some of the patient's relatives, the CECC said.

The infection is likely linked to the Tasty chain restaurant, on Zhongshan Road in Zhongli District, where the patient worked, the CECC said.

Following a year-end celebration at the restaurant on Jan. 7 by a Taoyuan branch of the Union Bank of Taiwan, some 13 employees at the bank branch and one of their family members have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past two days.

The cluster at the bank is linked to a larger outbreak of COVID-19 that originated at Taoyuan International Airport, with more than half of the cases determined to be Omicron variant infections, according to the CECC.

More details of the new domestic case, the 56th in that outbreak, will be disclosed at Friday's press briefing, the CECC said.
