CORONAVIRUS/P. LEAGUE+ reduces number of players needed for games to go ahead

Taiwan’s professional basketball league P. LEAGUE+ on Tuesday revised its disease prevention regulations to postpone the games of teams unable to log in at least eight players on the day of a game.

According to a P. LEAGUE+ statement, the move was made to prevent teams from playing games if they are unable to field eight players, including one international import player, in the event too many are in quarantine infected with COVID-19 or listed as close contacts.

Originally, the league set the minimum number of players to be logged in for a game at 10, including two international imports.

The league made the announcement after Taiwan’s men’s semi-professional Super Basketball League and Women’s Super Basketball League abruptly concluded their respective seasons last week because of the spread of COVID-19 among players.

The P. LEAGUE+ also requires its players to undergo a rapid test 48 hours before a game and any positive results are checked with PCR testing, during which time players are not be allowed to be with their teams.

Meanwhile, in Taiwan’s professional baseball league, the CPBL, the Wei Chuan Dragons announced Tuesday that at least 15 players of the club were confirmed positive for COVID-19, while another got a positive rapid test result.

Initial reports of the outbreak in the Wei Chuan Dragons camp came on April 27, when the club announced that some of its players had tested positive through rapid testing.

On April 30, the club said it had 16 players under quarantine, including four confirmed to have contracted COVID-19, four receiving positive results from rapid tests, and eight close contacts.
