The basic taxi fare will be increased from the current NT$70 to NT$85 (US$2.79), with payment increments changed from an additional NT$5 every 80 seconds to NT$5 every 60 seconds, effective April 1, 2023, according to an official at Taipei City Public Transportation Office.
The new fare rates will apply in Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung, the office announced Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, an additional NT$30 will be charged per taxi ride during the extended Lunar New Year holiday from Jan. 17-29, 2023.
Amid rising fuel costs and inflation, the Taipei City Commercial Taxi Union proposed increasing the basic fare from NT$70 to NT$100 in November.
Taipei City Public Transportation Office said last month that it would coordinate with its counterparts in New Taipei and Keelung before making a decision on the proposal.
