Taipei, The New Taipei District Court has decided to extend the detention of three American defendants in the brutal murder of a Canadian citizen in the city last year.
According to the ruling issued Feb. 27, the detention period for Oren Shlomo Mayer, Ewart Odane Bent and Jason Eugene Hobbie will be extended for another two months from March 7 because they pose a flight risk and could collude with each other, a court official said Monday.
Mayer and Bent were indicted on charges of killing Canadian Ryan Sanjay Ramgahan and dismembering his body, which was found on a riverbank under Zhongzheng Bridge in New Taipei's Yonghe District in August last year, while Hobbie was charged with aiding and abetting the murder.
Mayer and Bent have denied the murder charges, although Bent has admitted to destruction of a corpse. In addition, Hobbie has also denied aiding and abetting.
