Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) lifted a sea warning for Tropical Storm Nesat Sunday evening but warned heavy rain was likely to continue in areas north of Taoyuan and Yilan County through Monday.
As of 8 p.m. Sunday, Nesat was located 320 kilometers southwest of Eluanbi on Taiwan’s southern tip and was moving in a west-southwesterly direction at 15 kilometers per hour, the CWB said.
The CWB said the storm had a radius of 200 km and was carrying maximum sustained winds of 119 kph and gusts of up to 155 kph.
According to the CWB, seasonal northeasterly winds could bring rainfall to windward areas of northern and eastern Taiwan Monday, with heavy rain likely in coastal and mountainous regions of Greater Taipei, and areas north of Taoyuan and Yilan County.
The northeasterly winds are set to strengthen over the next few days, bringing lows of 18 degrees Celsius in northern and northeastern Taiwan and 20 degrees elsewhere, Tuesday into Wednesday, the CWB said.
The periphery of Nesat and the northeasterly winds had brought heavy or torrential rain to the north and northeast, causing agricultural losses in several areas.
As of 5 p.m. Sunday, estimated losses in Yilan peaked at NT$1.17 million (US$36,542), with ginger, cabbage, and pumpkins the most affected crops, according to the Council of Agriculture.
As of 5 p.m., Datong Township in Yilan had recorded 972.5 mm of accumulated rainfall during the storm’s passage, the highest in Taiwan, according to the CWB.
In addition, the storm triggered landslides in the township, trapping around 210 passengers and motorists on the Provincial Highway 7, also known as Northern Cross-Country Highway.
