Fubon Financial Holdings Co. Ltd. (????) has changed the name of the EDA Rhinos (????) to Fubon Guardians (????) after it took over the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, ????) team last month, the company said Wednesday.
Fubon Financial's subsidiary, Fubon Sports and Entertainment Co., has purchased the EDA Rhinos (????) for NT$300 million (US$9.47 million) and officially took over the team Nov. 1.
Since the takeover, the timing of an announcement of the team's new name, mascot and trademark had become a major concern among fans.
Chris Tsai (???), president of Fubon Sports and Entertainment and head of the team, said that he aims to build the EDA Rhinos into a strong team to compete in the annual CPBL championships, by investing significantly in new equipment in the initial period following the takeover.
Fubon Financial, a longtime supporter of sports in Taiwan, currently sponsors an amateur baseball team, the Fubon Bulls, and a semi-professional team in the Super Basketball League, the Fubon Braves.
