Taipei: Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE) has issued an apology and committed to revisiting the case of a teacher accused of bullying students at National Taiwan University of Sport. This follows a press conference held by Taiwan People's Party (TPP) legislative caucus leader Huang Kuo-chang, who highlighted the issue.According to Focus Taiwan, the press conference featured a former student, identified only by his surname Wu, who shared his experiences of alleged bullying by a department head surnamed Hung. The accusations involved verbal abuse and violent actions, such as sticking a knife into a desk and kicking down a door. These incidents reportedly took place before Wu's graduation earlier this year.Huang Kuo-chang stated that the teacher's alleged behavior had forced many students to transfer schools or leave the sports club. Wu Lin-hui, head of the MOE's Department of Student Affairs and Special Education, acknowledged the harm caused and apologized to the former student. Wu admitted that althoug h the case was initially reported in May, a formal response from the MOE was delayed until October.Wu further explained that the investigation revealed student concerns about impropriety, but the findings did not meet the criteria for bullying. Despite this, Wu conceded that the teacher's conduct was "extremely inappropriate" and violated the Teachers' Act. The MOE has pledged to re-evaluate the investigation and urge the school to hold a faculty evaluation meeting to address the situation. The determination of the MOE to tackle bullying allegations aligns with other recent official actions, including the dismissal of a Ministry of Labor official linked to a civil servant's suicide in October.
