ELECTIONS 2022/Election campaigns around Taiwan, Nov. 25

As campaigning for Saturday’s local government elections entered its final stretch, candidates and major political parties held massive rallies around Taiwan on Friday, before all campaigns need to cease at midnight.
Over the past few days, political heavyweights have been crisscrossing the country to garner support for candidates running in Taiwan’s local government elections, which take place every four years.
The main focus has been on the races for mayors of Taiwan’s six special municipalities — Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung — as well as those for county magistrates and county-level city mayors.
Also on Saturday, citizens aged 18 and above will vote in a referendum on a proposed constitutional amendment to lower the voting age in all elections from 20 to 18.
“A win in Taipei, is a win for Taiwan,” President Tsa Ing-wen (蔡英文) said at the campaign rally for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei mayoral candidate Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) Friday evening.
Meanwhile, opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) urged people to head to the polls on Saturday, because every vote can decide the future of Taiwan’s democracy.
When campaigning for Taiwan People’s Party Hsinchu City mayoral Kao Hung-an (高虹安), Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said people in Hsinchu now have a third choice other than the KTM and DPP, and a vote for Kao will lead to a better future for Hsinchu and Taiwan.
