Eswatini prime minister to visit Taiwan

A delegation led by Prime Minister of Eswatini Cleopas Sipho Dlamini will arrive in Taiwan on Sunday for a visit that is set to include meetings with President Tsai Ing-wen (???) and other top government officials, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Saturday.

In a statement, MOFA said the delegation will meet with Tsai, Premier Chen Chien-jen (???) and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (???) during their visit to Taiwan, without specifying how long they planned to stay.

In addition, the Eswatini group will meet with representatives from CECI Engineering Consultants, Inc., Tex-Ray Industrial Co. and other Taiwanese businesses that have established operations in the African nation, the statement said.

The delegation also includes Dlamini’s wife and acting director of Public Prosecutions Lomvula Hlophe, and Tambo Gina and Thabsile Mlangeni, respectively minister and principal secretary of Economic Planning and Development, the statement added.

According to MOFA, this will be Dlamini’s first visit to Taiwan after being appointed prime minister in July 2021 by King Mswati III, who has ruled Eswatini, one of only a handful of absolute monarchies in the world, since 1986.

MOFA noted in the statement that Taiwan and Eswatini will celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in September, adding that it looks forward to working with the African ally to deepen bilateral ties.

Eswatini is one of 14 states to maintain diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name, and the only one in Africa.
