Taipei, The Taichung Prison has determined that former President Chen Shui-bian (???) violated the conditions under which he was allowed to attend a campaign event for his son and will consequently be barred from all future events.
Taichung Prison Deputy Warden Lee Chin-kuo (???) said Saturday that Chen violated one of the four conditions set by the prison before his son Chen Chih-chung's (???) campaign event -- that he could not go on stage.
Chen Shui-bian, who is currently on medical parole, applied to the Taichung Prison, which is responsible for carrying out his jail sentence, to attend a campaign event on March 17 for his son, who is running for a seat on the Kaohsiung City Council.
The prison approved the application on the conditions that the former president would not go on stage, give a speech, talk about politics or be interviewed.
At one point that night, however, Chen Shui-bian went on stage to hug his son, something the Taichung Prison verified and found to be in violation of the conditions established.
Lee said that while it seemed that Chen Shui-bian was prompted to go on stage by the crowd and did not violate the other three conditions, his actions jeopardized his health and social harmony.
As such, the Taichung Prison will not approve any future applications submitted by Chen Shui-bian to attend future events, he said.
Chen Chih-chung said that his father told him he had a feeling this would happen after the event and asked him to continue his fight for the city councilor seat.
Meanwhile, supporters of the former president have officially founded a public group in his name to help Chen Shui-bian with his needs and his wishes for the country.
The group's head, Kuo Cheng-deng (???), said Chen Shui-bian was able reach out to lawmakers of his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) while President Ma Ying-jeou (???) of the Kuomintang was in office, but the current DPP administration of President Tsai Ing-wen (???) has been unhelpful and at times harsher on Chen than the KMT.
The purpose of the group, therefore, is to motivate politicians to help Chen Shui-bian and promote his policy ideas with the help of votes from their constituents, Kuo said.
Some 700 to 800 people have already applied to join the group, he said.
