Former President Ma Ying-jeou will take part in the upcoming annual swim across Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County, which will draw more than 20,000 swimmers from various parts of the world, the county government said Friday.
Ma will release 10,000 fish fries into the lake before firing the starting pistol for the event on Sept. 4, according to the county government.
He will then join the other participants in swimming 3,000 meters from Chaowu Pier to Yidashao Pier, the government said.
A total of 20,718 swimmers, including 170 with physical disabilities, have signed up for the 34th Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival, Nantou County Magistrate Lin Ming-chen (???) said.
The participants will be from 26 countries, including the United States, Japan, Europe, Australia and India, he said.
On the day of the event, camera drones will be prohibited over the area of the lake where the swim takes place, according to the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration.
Any media organizations and individuals who plan to use camera drones to record the swim are required to apply with the administration by Aug. 31, and provide information such as who the operators and observers are as well as when and where they plan to use the devices, the administration said.
