Ex-President Tsai Departs for Europe to Strengthen International Ties

Taipei: Former President Tsai Ing-wen embarked on a journey to Europe on Friday night, targeting deepened connections with Lithuania and Denmark. This marks her second visit to the continent since her departure from office in May of the previous year.

According to Focus Taiwan, Tsai's office confirmed that her initial destination is Lithuania. During her visit, she is scheduled to deliver a speech at Vilnius University and engage in discussions with Dalia Grybauskaite, who served as Lithuania's president from 2009 to 2019. Following her engagements in Lithuania, Tsai will proceed to Denmark, where she is set to address the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, taking place from May 13-14.

Tsai announced on social media that the primary objective of her trip is to reinforce Taiwan's commitment to collaborating with democratic allies. Her focus is on promoting regional security and stability, upholding freedom and democracy, and defending Taiwan. She further emphasized the importance of Taiwan and Europe continuing as partners to enhance economic resilience globally.

Despite the disclosed agenda, the duration of Tsai's stay in Europe and the identities of her accompanying delegates remain undisclosed, as her office did not respond to requests for further details from CNA. This European trip follows Tsai's previous visit to the Czech Republic, France, and Belgium in October 2024, after completing her two four-year terms in office.
