A farewell ceremony to honor Tseng Sheng-guang (曾聖光), a Taiwanese man who died on Nov. 2 fighting for Ukraine, will be held Monday at one of the largest churches in Lviv, according to his paramilitary unit.
The religious service for Tseng will start at 2 p.m. at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the Carpathian Sich Battalion said in a Facebook post.
The paramilitary unit, which comprises Ukrainian and foreign volunteers, said in the post that Tseng “entered the ranks of the 49th separate rifle battalion ‘Carpathian Sichi’ on June 19, 2022.”
The 25-year-old from Hualien, who had served in Taiwan’s military 2017-2021, “proved himself as a disciplined, balanced, brave warrior,” the unit said.
When Tseng enlisted in the Carpathian Sichi, he said he “came to fight on the side of good, for Ukraine and for its people,” according to the post.
Carpathian Sich Battalion press officer Vasylyna Nakonechna confirmed with CNA on Sunday that Tseng’s mother, wife and sister will attend the farewell service at the church in Lviv, an iconic 17th century structure that is one of the largest religious buildings in the city.
Last week, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said it would do all it could to help with the paperwork for the Tseng family to attend the service in Ukraine.
Arthur Kharytonov, a member of the non-governmental Ukraine+Taiwan Forum, told CNA that the Ukrainian government and military will assist the Carpathian Sich with the organization of the memorial service for Tseng.
Kharytonov said his organization is encouraging all attendees to bring a Taiwan national flag to send off the fallen soldier.
