Fire at Hsinchu Power Substation Results in Casualties

Hsinchu: A fire broke out Monday afternoon at the Zhuyuan Extra High Voltage Substation in Hsinchu City, killing one person and leaving two injured, according to local authorities.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Hsinchu City Fire Bureau reported that firefighters received a call at 3:27 p.m. concerning a suspected explosion and subsequent flames at the Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) facility located in the city's East District. Firefighters arrived at the scene six minutes later to commence extinguishing the blaze.

Three individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment. Among them was a person who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and firefighting efforts continued as of Monday evening, the bureau stated.

Taipower revealed that the fire ignited during testing of voltage stabilization equipment at the substation. The incident led to a brief voltage drop that affected some power users in the Hsinchu Science Park, though it did not result in a power outage or disrupt the park's electricity supply.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. confirmed that it did not anticipate any impact from the incident, noting that its power supply remained normal.
