The first batch of certified carbon neutrally produced crude oil bought by CPC Corp. Taiwan from overseas has arrived in Taiwan, the state-owned fuel supplier said on Sunday.
In a press release, the CPC said a total of 1.05 million barrels of crude oil had been unloadedat Sha Lung oil terminal in Taoyuan early Sunday from the crude oil tanker Violando after a journey of around a month from Ceyhan, Turkey.
The batch of crude oil is part of a deal with Azerbaijan’s SOCAR Trading, according to CPC Taiwan. SOCAR Trading is the international marketing and development arm of SOCAR, the state oil company of Azerbaijan.
The crude oil produced by the company has earned carbon-free certifications from both the Swiss-based Climate Neutral Commodity (CNC), a certification standard for carbon-neutral transactions and services in the raw materials industry, and London-based Intertek that provides a carbon intensity certification program that applies to all oil and gas producers, according to CPC Taiwan.
The purchase of the batch of carbon-neutral crude oil provides the CPC with enough emission reduction credits to compensate for the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that can be absorbed by 88 Taipei Daan Forest Parks in a year, it said.
According to CPC Chairman Lee Shun-chin (???), the import of carbon-neutral crude oil was made as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to move toward zero-carbon emissions to combat climate change.
The company also joined the Climate Impact X (CIX), a Singapore-based global carbon exchange and marketplace that aims to scale the voluntary carbon market in April, it added.
