Taipei, Five Kinmen elementary school children have been honored as the county's "little gold medalist tour guides" for standing out among 22 students at a camp for training young tour guides, Kinmen County authorities said in a statement Wednesday.
The five children selected were Yang Yi-chen (???) and Hsu Ching-yi (???) from Jhongjheng Elementary School, Tao Tzu-yu (???) from Jinsha Elementary School, Tsai Hsu-chih (???) from Kaishiuan Primary School and Yang Tsai-yen (???) from Jinhu Elementary School.
In recognition of their achievement, the five children will each be presented with an award and prize money of NT$5,000 (US$162) on Monday by Kinmen County Magistrate Chen Fu-hai (???).
The four-day training camp was held Aug. 10-12 and Aug. 15 in the county with the aim of training fourth to six grade elementary school students on how to be a tour guide, the county government said.
Apart from indoor classroom activities, the children were also split into groups to practice their craft at local tourist attractions such as the Juguang Tower, Kinmen Military Headquarters of Qing Dynasty, and Kinmen Civil Defense Tunnel, the county's Tourism Department said.
Chen Mei-ling (???), director-general of the county's tourism department, said the children in the camp made incredible progress, starting off shy but eventually showing commendable spirit and confidence when sharing information on county tourist sites.
