Nagoya:Fu Chao-hsuan captivated the audience at the Asian Games in Japan with a gold medal-winning leap of 2.25 meters in the high jump competition.

According to Focus Taiwan, Fu's successful first attempt at 2.25 meters at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium outperformed India's Sarvesh Anil Kushare, who cleared the same height only on his second try. Neither athlete managed to surpass 2.28 meters, securing the gold for Fu.

This victory marks a historic achievement for Taiwan, as Fu is the first Taiwanese male athlete to win a gold medal in track and field at the Asian Games in 60 years. Despite setbacks from injuries and stagnating results in his earlier years, Fu's dedication paid off with this remarkable accomplishment.

Standing at 1.96 meters, Fu is the tallest of three sons, born to a former volleyball player mother and a father who once practiced high jump. He began focusing on high jump in high school under the guidance of coach Chen Hung-chieh, who recognized his talent early on.

Fu's journey was not without challenges. In 2024, fellow Taiwanese high jumper Yeh Po-ting set a national record with a 2.30-meter jump. This achievement initially frustrated Fu, who felt left behind. However, his perseverance shone through at the Asian Games, where his focus shifted from aiming for bronze to clinching gold after clearing 2.25 meters.

The presence of Fu's mother at the event bolstered his confidence, helping him maintain his rhythm throughout the competition. With his Asian Games success, Fu now aims to compete at the world championships and eventually fulfill his childhood dream of participating in the Olympics.
