A fugitive involved in telecom fraud overseas has been brought back to Taiwan from Indonesia, the Investigation Bureau under the Ministry of Justice said Friday.
The bureau said that Cheng Yu-hsiang (???) is a major suspect in a telecom fraud ring operating in the Philippines that targeted mainland Chinese people and reaped illegal gains of more than 16 million Chinese yuan (US$2.4 million) in 2012.
Cheng was repatriated to the Taiwan from the Philippines and turned over to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, but fled to Indonesia last year.
The bureau said it has been working closely with the judicial authorities in Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States to track down fugitives and bring them back to face justice in Taiwan.
Cheng's case is one of the results of this cooperation, the bureau said.
