Generation Z main buyers of books in Taiwan: Eslite report

Young people, roughly defined as members of Generation Z, are big buyers of books in Taiwan, according to an annual report compiled by Eslite bookstore, which showed they account for about 30 percent of its customer base.

Citing the report, which analyzes the reading habits of Eslite's 3.3 million members, the bookstore said in a press release on Tuesday that teens and young adults aged 29 and under are its main customers, followed by those in the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups.

This trend was also reflected in the top 10 list of best-selling Chinese-language literary writers at Eslite bookstore for 2022, with younger writers Taylor Lee (??), Ayri Chang (??) and Middle making the list for a fifth consecutive year.

Taylor Lee and Middle, along with Eileen Chang (???), Huang Shan-liao (???), Lung Ying-tai (???), Jiu Ba-dao (???) and Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (????), were on the the list in both Taiwan and Hong Kong.

"Dollargut Dream Department Store" by young South Korean writer Lee Mi-ye even squeezed out familiar faces like Keigo Higashino, Toshikazu Kawaguchi and Tess Gerritsen to top the list of translated literary works sold by Eslite in 2022.
