The Central Weather Bureau has issued heavy rain advisories for several cities and counties north of Chiayi County, saying those areas will see short but powerful spurts of rain due to northeasterly winds and a weather system from southern China.
The rain warning, issued Monday night, covers Keelung City, Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu City and County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, Yunlin County, and Chiayi County.
The bureau advised people in those areas to be on the alert for sporadic heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and strong gusts, and warned of possible landslides in mountainous areas.
Heavy rain is defined by the weather bureau as rainfall of over 80 millimeters in 24 hours or over 40 mm in one hour.
