Taipei: A heavy rain alert has been issued for northern Taiwan as seasonal northeasterly winds continue to affect the island, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Wednesday. The advisory indicates substantial rainfall, with expectations of more than 80 millimeters within 24 hours or 40 millimeters in just three hours, impacting Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung cities, as well as Yilan County.According to Focus Taiwan, the CWA highlighted the possibility of sudden downpours in the mountainous regions of the Greater Taipei area, along Taiwan's northeastern coast, and in Yilan County. The combination of seasonal winds and additional moisture from southern China is increasing the probability of significant rainfall in northern Taiwan. In contrast, the southern mountainous regions might experience only sporadic showers due to the winds' limited influence. The weather in northern Taiwan is predicted to be cooler, with temperatures ranging from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius throughout the day. Meanwhile, centr al and eastern Taiwan may see daytime highs of 25-26 degrees, and southern Taiwan is expected to enjoy more stable and warmer conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 27-28 degrees Celsius. The CWA also cautioned about potential strong winds in several areas, including the Hengchun Peninsula, Orchid and Green islands, and regions between Taoyuan City and Yunlin County, as well as the outlying islands of Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu. Additionally, Tropical Storm Man-Yi has been downgraded to a tropical depression and is not expected to directly impact Taiwan, as it is moving west-southwest, far from the island. In other environmental updates, the Ministry of Environment reported that the air quality across Taiwan is likely to remain "fair" or "good" on Wednesday, providing some reassurance amidst the rainy conditions.
