Taipei, The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) has issued a heavy rain warning for three counties in eastern and southern Taiwan due to the influence of a tropical storm.
Hualien, Taitung and Pingtung counties are expected to be hit by heavy rain because of the influence of a tropical storm heading through the Bashi Channel, CWB forecaster Kuan Hsin-ping (???) said late Tuesday morning.
The CWB defines "heavy rain" as accumulated rainfall of more than 80mm in 24 hours or more than 40mm of rainfall in one hour.
Kuan said the tropical storm named "Son Tinh," which was upgraded from a tropical depression earlier in the morning, is the ninth storm in the western Pacific Ocean so far this year and is unlikely to hit Taiwan directly.
But eastern and southeastern Taiwan, mountainous areas in the southern part of the country, and the Hengchun Peninsula will still be vulnerable to heavy downpours and strong winds brought by the storm's periphery, Kuan said.
