Taipei, With a weather front forecast to affect southern Taiwan, heavy rain warning alerts were issued Monday by the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) for six cities and counties in southern and central parts of the island.
The warnings were issued for Tainan, Kaohsiung, Nantou County, Chiayi County, Pingtung County and Taitung.
A heavy rain warning refers to accumulated rainfall of more than 80 millimeters in a 24hour period or more than 40 mm in one hour, according to the CWB.
Northeasterly winds and heavy cloud will bring intermittent rain to the whole of the country early Tuesday, with the weather expected to remain cloudy throughout the day, the CWB forecast.
Temperatures in northern Taiwan are expected to range around 22 degrees Celsius, while temperatures in central and southern Taiwan, including some areas of Hualien and Taitung, are expected to range between 24 and 27 degrees, the CWB said.
As the northeasterly winds are forecast to strengthen Tuesday, the CWB also issued strong wind advisories for New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Tainan and Kaohsiung cities, and for Yilan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Hualien, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Taitung, Lienchiang (Matsu), Pingtung, Kinmen and Penghu counties.
The CWB warned people taking part in activities along the coast and at sea to exercise caution due to the strong winds, which could reach to between 8 to 10 on the Beaufort scale.
