Taipei: Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) is set to implement a range of upgrades to enhance passenger experience, including the introduction of additional train services and the modernization of its ticketing system, Chairman Shih Che announced on Wednesday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Shih highlighted during his address at the Legislature that ridership numbers have been on the rise following the COVID-19 pandemic. The daily passenger count is expected to average 214,000 in 2024, reflecting a 7 percent increase from the previous year. In response to this growing demand, THSR plans to add 25 weekly train services starting July 1, increasing the total to 1,128 services. The company also intends to introduce more services during peak periods in the fourth quarter.
Shih further elaborated on plans to develop an advanced ticketing and seat reservation system. This new system will enable passengers to utilize mobile QR codes, facilitating paper-free travel. Moreover, it will offer digital commuter passes and coupons, streamlining the overall travel experience for passengers.
In anticipation of the arrival of 12 new trains in late 2026, THSR is undertaking significant enhancements to its maintenance facilities in southern Taiwan. Additionally, efforts are underway to upgrade both station and onboard infrastructure, ensuring that the railway system remains efficient and capable of handling increased passenger traffic.
