Taipei--A Hong Kong woman has been caught trying to bring over eight kilograms of cocaine into Taiwan in the largest drug bust of recent years, the Aviation Police Bureau said Thursday.
The woman, 27, and identified only by her surname Li (?), arrived in Taiwan from Dubai aboard an Emirates flight the previous afternoon.
Having been tipped off in advance, aviation police and custom officers targeted the woman and found the cocaine in her checked-in luggage.
Police estimated that the haul is worth nearly NT$100 million (US$3.3 million) in street value, making it the largest drug bust of recent years at the airport.
Li told police that she needed money because she had been unemployed for more than three months, and that she received HK$20,000 for working as a mule, or someone who carries drugs across borders for money.
The woman was turned over to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office for violation of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
