Taiwan will continue to experience hot weather for the next seven days, with afternoon thunderstorms expected across the country, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Tuesday.
Due to the continuing effects of a Pacific high-pressure system, the hot weather is expected to continue nationwide until June 28, CWB forecaster Chen I-hsiu (???) said.
Temperature highs are forecast to range between 32 and 35 degrees Celsius across the country during the seven-day period, while some areas could see the mercury rise above 36 degrees during the day, Chen said.
The heat will become especially apparent over the next three days starting Wednesday, she said.
According to the CWB, daytime highs of 36 degrees are likely across nine cities and counties in Taiwan on Wednesday, including Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Hualien, Taipei and New Taipei.
From Friday to June 28, the high-pressure system will weaken slightly, with afternoon thunderstorms forecast island-wide due to the influence of an approaching southwesterly wind system that is set to bring abundant moisture, Chen said.
Sporadic rain can be expected in the southeast, while mountainous areas in the east could also see heavy or extremely heavy rainfall.
