Taipei--Hundreds of students in eastern Taiwan's Hualien County fell ill Thursday, allegedly due to food poisoning, after eating the lunches provided by their schools.
A total of 478 students from Hualien's Tzu-Chiang Junior High School, Ji'an Elementary School and Tai-Chang Elementary School reported symptoms of stomach ache and vomiting beginning Thursday afternoon, after consuming their school lunches, said Liu Mei-chen (???), head of the Hualien County Department of Education.
Among those students, 169 sought medical treatment, Liu said.
The central kitchen of Tai-Chang Elementary School supplies the lunches for all three schools, she said.
The Hualien County Health Bureau said the caterer was suspended from providing lunches from Friday until health authorities complete their inspections.
Food and stool samples were collected for examination, and the results are expected to be available within a week, the bureau said.
